Adobe Acquires Macromedia

Adobe and Macromedia announced today that Adobe will aquire Macromedia in an all-stock deal. That’s weird. I’m not sure how I feel about this, given my loathing of GoLive. Makes me a little uneasy.

  1. Perhaps they’ll make a hybrid named GoWeaver or DreamLive? ;) Most likely though they’ll kill the current version of GoLive, considering that Dreamweaver is the standard.

  2. I like the idea of killing GoLive. You’re probably right, unless they believe there are strong features from GoLive that can be incorporated into DW. That’s where I see an opportunity to screw things up. I’m hoping the Macromedia folks that stay on board retain some control over those products.

Probably what’s going to be more interesting than the GL vs DW issues (since DW kills GL) is going to be what happens with Macromedia’s Fireworks and Freehand in relationship to Photoshop, ImageReady, and Illustrator.

I’m hoping this merger will mean that Adobe finally figures out how to make Photoshop’s interface as easy to use as the Flash interface. It would be nice if Photoshop had a library like Flash, and if selecting and manipulating objects on the stage were as easy as Flash.
